3            NGĀ KŌRERO A TE Heamana/ Chairperson ANNOUNCEMENTS   

Chairperson Harry Burkhardt

·         The Extraordinary Council meeting held a couple of weeks ago, viewed as a very articulate expression of aspirations. Acknowledged Kahika Moko and the way he led the meeting.

·         Attended the Aerospace Summit in Christchurch yesterday as a part of a Māori rōpū thinking about how our epistemology reflect the space which is called up there by the power and how might we use that for good.

·         Observed protesters waving Palestinian flags and speaking against militarization, which sparked thoughts on how technological innovation should be used for positive purposes, particularly in areas like climate change adaptation. Emphasized the need to harness these technologies to make informed decisions for the future.

 

Kahika/Mayor Moko Tepania

·         Over the weekend, Kahika returned home to Mitimiti for the unveiling of the new carved Waharoa at Mātihetihe Marae, alongside Cr Rākena. It was a beautiful celebration for the hapū, Te Tao Maui and Te Hokokeha.

·         Expressed joy about returning home, sharing a saying: "All you with fairer hair, come sit down, and if your hair is dark and vibrant, get up and go."

·         Acknowledged Kyla Campbell-Kamariera, Chair of the marae committee, who is in her late 20s, and Wiremu Reid, a new treasurer and old schoolmate, who is 34 and from Mitimiti. Noted the emergence of young leaders actioning the aspirations of their people.

·         Highlighted the recommissioning of the wharekai at Waipuna Marae after 4 years of refurbishment, which included a new roof. The celebration was significant for Panguru and the wider Hokianga, as other marae had to open their doors during Waipuna’s closure.

·         On Sunday, attended the ceremony in Ahipara for the blessing of a new pouwhenua, featuring the ancestor Toakai as the kaitiaki of the land at Moringaehe, now a Historic reserve.

·         The weekend was a major celebration for Te Rarawa Kaiwhare.

·         Acknowledged the guests from Te Tii Marae in Waitangi, noting it was great to see them 4 months ahead of the upcoming gathering in Waitangi.

·         Gave acknowledgements to all present in the room.

·         Recognised the North Hokianga Roading Group, chaired by Cr Tāmati Rākena.

·         Celebrated Moringaehe's return to hapū as a historic reserve, with hopes it may become a Māori reserve in the future.

·         Acknowledged the new Queen Ngā wai hono i te pō Paki, and noted two youth from Tainui, Ngā wai hono i te pō and Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, the latter awarded Politician of the Year and recently receiving her tohu in Canada.

·         Expressed hope that securing the lease for Kaitaia Airport would bring great satisfaction to the people of Muriwhenua.

·         Acknowledged Kahika, Kōwhai, and all the Councillors for their tireless mahi.

  

Councillor - John Vujcich:

·         Acknowledged Cr Hilda for reminding everyone of those who have passed and for highlighting the great work that has been done.

·         Acknowledged the Chair for his ongoing mahi.

 

Kōwhai Deputy Mayor Kelly Stratford

·       Acknowledged Cr Hilda Halkyard-Harawira and Cr Tāmati Rākena for their comprehensive Kaikaunihera reports, reflecting on how busy the councillors have been and what we actually did in some of the hui.

·       Provided an update on Cyclone Gabriel recovery efforts, noting the development of an exit strategy. While recovery reports have been distributed in glossy documents, the exit strategy will be concise, and hopefully we are set for any other weather events that come our way working together with iwi and hapū.

Ngāti Kawa Taituha in relation to Waitangi Marae’s preparations for the re-opening of Te Tii Marae as well as Waitangi 2025 Commemorations.
